Abstract

Quality labelling is a strategy that is widely used in southern European countries to promote products with differential characteristics. However, the profusion of origin-related labels is causing the opposite effect as the message they convey is becoming increasingly less clear to consumers. The various solutions recently proposed to overcome this problem include what is know as second-generation labels linked to territorial rural development processes. In this paper we present an original methodology to evaluate these labels and review the methodological challenges in undertaking an evaluation of this type. The suitability of the methodology proposed has been empirically proved in a sample of fifteen territories involved in a territorial quality label joint project.
