Abstract

A large literature on agricultural studies has been claiming for decades the capacity of adaptation and persistence of family farms. Some of them have been found to be capable to undertake pathways of growth by constituting complex organizational forms involving more than one household (either formalized or not by means of a written agreement), which enable them to enlarge their financial managerial capacity. This fact, which is being recently revealed in studies performed in several developed countries, is virtually absent of Spanish literature and barely captured by agricultural statistics. In this article we aim to contribute to the theoretical conceptualization of these "multifamily" farms, which constitute a new category in the analysis of the patterns of change of family farms, and to provide empirical evidence on their diffusion in an intensive horticultural area in the South-East of the country. Finally, connections between the family profiles and the structural characteristics of the farms are explored.
