Abstract

The recreational use of a natural resource is conditioned, among other things, by the personal interests the user wishes to satisfy. This study uses the Means-End Chain method to assess whether green space visitors attempt to reach their personal values through the perceived benefits of the good and its attributes; and discusses the use of this methodology in the area of environmental valuation. The results reveal that a key role is played by distance or journey time, the availability of recreational facilities, physical and mental health benefits and ecological lifestyle habits. Visitors also include personal values both of an individual nature (enjoyment, personal quality of life, self-fulfillment) and a social nature (sense of social belonging). The analysis examines, in addition, the relative importance of different personal values as a function of the frequency of natural resource usage, finding that environmental and social awareness increase as a function of usage frequency. Based on these findings, future land sue planning and policies might consider users' demands as a way to ensure that the green space experience satisfies their intrinsic needs to increase the use, valuation and preservation of natural areas.
