Abstract

One of the main goals of the European rural development policy is to promote the female participation in the labour market and female entrepreneurship. In the Catalan Leader+ Programme around 50 percent of the individual projects where promote by women. Nevertheless, the differences between the 12 Local Action Groups were very remarkable, with participation levels between 67,3 percent and 20,7 percent. The main objective of the article is to study which factors influence the different levels of female participation. We didnt found any relevant relation between the female participation and the positive discrimination established by the Groups, the number of women in the decisional bodies, and the socioeconomic characteristic. Otherwise, the better results are found on the Groups that mainly supported the start-up of business, the individual projects, and limited the participation of industrial and agro-business projects in front of other sectors. In sum, if the Local Action Groups want to increase female entrepreneurship in rural areas they must support especially the projects in which women are more concerned, like new firms, small entreprises, services like for example shops, or services to people.
