Abstract

It is well known that firms use to relocate their plants as parts of their strategy to lower labour costs and increase profitability. This process has also taken place in rural areas within industrialized countries due to its suitable social and economic peculiarities. In this context, this research has analyzed that founding and survival of the textile sector in rural Andalusian areas. Our main conclusion is that such survival must be understood as a consequence of some particularities in the production mode and social organization. Namely, within the agrarian and rural character of the territory, we have found that the vital cycle of seamstresses women play a quite relevant role. The research conclusions are based in the study of several municipalities in the area of Jaen. To come closer to this complex reality, crammed with informal economy, we have taken advantage of triangulation as a research method, using a combination of survey analysis and in-depth interviews.
