Abstract

Por fin, otros vecinos se especializaron en el trabajo de la madera para su posterior venta en forma semielaborada a carpinteros asentados en nucleos urbanos proximos...The author makes a contribution to the study of the social and economic structures of the mountain regions of preindustrial Europe, paying attention to a model of regional economic specialization based on the exploitation of public forests for extraction of wood. He chooses the case of the region of "Pinares", in the provinces of Soria and Burgos, where its inhabitants, taking profit of the abundant forest resources of the region, and forced by the ineptitude of the land for the cultivation of corn and vineyard, based their domestic economies on the exploitation of wood, during a long period of time, from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century. In a first phase their main activity consisted in transporting and selling wood in other territories of the Crown of Castile. But later many of them specialized in the transport of other products like wool, iron, salt, corn or coal. And finally, others specialized in the work of wood for its commercialization as a semielaborate product among carpenters who lived in nearby towns.
