Abstract

The demand for labor by these holdings experienced large seasonal fluctuations and made necessary, for the carrying out of essential tasks, the recourse to a large number of persons who could not be employed for a large part of the year. Some of these task were done thanks to a labor pool which was available in small holdings. But the attraction of the small settler or owner and of workers from other professions, women, children and immigrants, was achieved through a complex typology of hiring methods. Piecework often confronted neighboring laborers with immigrants and others, and the negotiating capacity of employers was strengthened by the intermittent employment of these varied groups. But their participation was inexcusable and the diverse hiring forms, also responded to the definition of adequate incentives per day's labor during the year earners and for the particularities of many of the labor of the agricultural employment universe.
