Abstract

One the one hand, this paper offers an evaluation of the main European structural aid applicable to standard vessels of a representative sample the European Union's fleet. On the other hand, a simulation exercise has been designed to evaluate the expected profitability of the Eu fishing fleets after considering the main lines of structural aid. These results are presented here by large fishing areas- North Sea, Baltic Sea, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea- as well as by fishing fleet segment- a total of 51. In general the results show that for a substantial part of the cases considered, public aid may collaborate in greatly improving fishermen's expectations relative to the profitability of the capital invested in the activity.
