Abstract

The present article traces the development of agrarian economics, a discipline which at many points in its history has been considered as an autonomous entity, outside mainstream economics. Agrarian economics was the origin of economics as a science, but during the nineteenth century it evolved independently, due to the origin of its practitioners, its objects of study, and, in the eyes of some authors, its methodology. From the time of its conception by the Physiocrats during the Enlightenment until its consolidation in the mainstream of economics as late as the second half of the twentieth century, the development of agrarian economics has reflected the efforts of a variety of authors, from agronomists to economists, to establish the discipline: a process that has led it towards the position it holds today, as an applied branch of the more general science of economics.
