Abstract

This paper uses the Yale Technology Concordance (YTC) to study the process of innovation in the Spanish Agricultural sector in 1965-1997. The YTC predicts patents (and utility models) by crops and livestock productions using the widely available information on the distribution of patenting across technology fields. This information is used to ascertain the volume, quality, and country origin of the technological capital available for used in the agricultural sector throughout the period. Results indicate the following pattern of innovation: a growing technological market with a tendency to the increase the quality of innovations and a gradual reduction of Spanish technology in favor of foreign technology.
