Abstract

From the mid-1980s, as a result of Member States difficulties in complying with the nitrates standard set by the EC Drinking Water Directive, the nitrate debate has gained public significance and political relevance in the European Union, escalating rapidly on the political agenda. The EU Nitrates Directive is the most outstanding example of the recent pressures on European farmers to curtail pollution and achieve higher environmental standards to redirect agriculture a little closer to sustainability. This paper examines the nitrate problem in Spain and the causes of the delay on in implementing the Nitrates Directive. Also, it analyses the nitrate issue in «El Campo de Dalías», examining how farmers’ view of nitrate pollution can hinder the practical application of the Directive.
