Current state and development trends of the pork market in Ukraine

The purpose of the article is to assess the current state and determine development tendencies of the domestic pork market in terms of organizational and economic transformations in the industry. Research methods. The research methodology is based on the comprehensive approach to functioning analysis of the pork market in Ukraine. The following methods have been used: analysis and synthesis for characterization of functioning peculiarities of the pork market; abstract and logical for summarizing the research results and formulating conclusions; empirical for assessing trends of the pork market; induction and deduction for formation of the research results; comparisons for comparison of objects and phenomena; tabular for visual representation of the research results. Research results. Complex analysis of the pork market in Ukraine, in particular dynamics of supply and demand formation, structural transformations in different categories of farms, export-import operations and price trends, has been carried out. Main tendencies for its further development have been predicted. Elements of scientific novelty. It has been set that sharp increase of wholesale and retail prices is caused, first of all, by reduction pork supply as a result of reduction in pig numbers and unprofitability of its production, as well as price increasing for poultry meat. It has been proved that as a result of decrease in the population solvency, pork producers have lost their positions in the domestic meat market. Thus, in the structure of meat production in Ukraine a share of pork has a decrease tendency, in particular, in 2016, it was 32.2%, whereas, in 2000, amounted to 40.7%. In the period between 2012 and 2016, consumption of pig meat per 1 person per year decreased from 21.1 kg to 19.0 kg. Practical significance. Analytical materials of the article have been based on relevant official statistics, which can be used for addressing development of the pork market.
