Abstract

The paper describes the basic characteristics of the traditional and strategic project management as well as analyses the differences between these two management disciplines. Given that traditional project management has, as an operational discipline, achieved rather impressive results in practice, new ideas were oriented towards connecting the strategic view of strategic management and the operational approach provided by project management. This in turn resulted in strategic project management, a new approach in the development of project management that suggests that projects should be managed in accordance with the strategic organizational goals and that the project execution should contribute to achieving both the project goals and the strategic organizational goals.
