Clusters and Regional Economic Development Geographic Concentration of SMES as a Source of Competitive Advantages

Abstract

Balanced regional development, support to small and medium enterprises, stimulation of innovation and generally raising competitiveness of economy are in very focus of policy-makers of economic development in the contemporary world. Clusters as in broadest sense, geographic concentration of interconnected companies and supporting institutions its popularity in last couple decades thanks mostly the fact that by single approach they provide possibilities for realization of objectives these as well as other policies of economic development. However, it is possible to say that results achieved by cluster-based policies do not correspond to proclaimed expectation as well as cluster potential. Even there are many reasons for that, definitely it is caused by insufficient understandings theoretical foundation of cluster concept, as well as preconditions, experiences and implication of practical application of cluster-based polices, too. This article is actually about it.
