Abstract

Africa has potential in the agricultural sector, with unused fertile lands. In the Western part, with abundant natural and human resources, agriculture represents wealth and is an important catalyst for achieving food security. This research analyzed the vulnerability and food security in the regions of the countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU): Benin, Burkina Faso, Costa do Marfim, Guiné-Bissau, Mali, Níger, Senegal, and Togo. The periods were selected according to the availability of data for each country, from 2013 to 2018. The Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM) was applied, carried out in part with the Factor Analysis of Principal Components, using secondary data, collected from the FAO database and the National Research Institutes of each country. The results showed that WAEMU countries are between F3 and F4 of vulnerability, on a scale ranging from F1, very low (good) to F5, very high (very bad). It is also clear that people living in the territory live in a situation of medium and high vulnerability. We can conclude that the Access Indicator and the Instability Indicator are the two most important factors for putting negative pressure on the WAEMU’s situation of food vulnerability and insecurity.
