Agroturismo Y Agricultura Circular En San Quintín: Sinergias Para Un Desarrollo Rural Sostenible

The San Quintín Valley, located in northwestern Baja California, Mexico, is one of the country's most dynamic agricultural export hubs, specializing in berries, tomatoes, and high-value vegetables. However, the consolidation of a linear production model has led to critical environmental externalities, including the overexploitation of aquifers, soil degradation, the massive generation of plastic and organic waste, and the socioeconomic vulnerability of rural communities. This article examines the integration of agritourism and circular agriculture as a transition strategy toward resilient and multifunctional rural development in the region. Using a mixed-methods approach, structured surveys of 85 production units, material flow analysis, geospatial mapping of tourism assets, and economic evaluation of circular-tourism integration prototypes were combined. The results show that implementing closed nutrient cycles, utilizing residual biomass for composting and bioenergy, and diversifying into educational and experiential agritourism activities can reduce agricultural waste by up to 40%, improve soil water retention, and generate between 25% and 30% additional income for farming families. Key enabling factors were also identified: technical training, initial financing, institutional collaboration, and local marketing. The research demonstrates that the convergence of agritourism and circular agriculture not only mitigates ecological pressures but also strengthens social capital, promotes local cultural identity, and positions San Quintín as a laboratory for agroecological innovation in semi-arid zones. The study provides an empirically validated and operational framework for public policies on ecological transition, rural economic diversification, and climate adaptation in agricultural regions dependent on international markets.
