Abstract

The Mixteca Region in the state of Puebla includes the municipality of Acatlán de Osorio, located in the southeast of the state in a cultural and socioeconomic area for rural development, especially in goat production. The main objective of this work was to establish the importance of rural extension as a development in family goat production units in the Mixteca region of Puebla. Data was collected through a survey conducted in the form of interviews with 15 producers in the study area. Five components were considered for the study: number of Family Production Units (FPUs), extension work in the FPU, improvement of the FPU through extension work, socioeconomic aspects of the FPUs, and species exploited by the FPUs. A comprehensive diagnosis of the production unit was conducted to supplement the information obtained, and descriptive statistics were then applied using SPSS 11 for Windows. Among the main results, the highest concentration of goat FPUs was found in the east, with six representing 40% of those considered in the study; 53% are managed by men, and 47% by women. Regarding educational attainment, 53% of the 15 producers surveyed had a secondary school education. Finally, they gave a grade from 0 to 10 regarding the extension work related to their goat UPFs, with production units 7, 11, and 12 standing out with a grade of 10. In conclusion, extension work is a valuable tool for the development of producers in Acatlán de Osorio, in the Mixteca region of Puebla, as it offers advice and training that support their agricultural productivity and well-being.
