W 2013 r. uprawiano 7,4 mln ton tytoniu na powierzchni 4,3 mln ha. Liderem w produkcji tytoniu są Chiny. W ostatnich dekadach uprawa tytoniu przesunęła się z krajów o wysokich dochodach do krajów o średnich i niskich dochodach. Odnotowano wysoki wzrost produkcji w Azji i Afryce oraz spadek w Europie i Ameryce Północnej. Światowe obroty handlowe tytoniem systematycznie rosną. Udział eksportu w globalnej produkcji tytoniu w 2013 r. wynosił 35,5%, co wskazuje na proeksportowy charakter produkcji w niektórych regionach świata. Głównym dostawcami są kraje Ameryki Południowej a importerami kraje Europy.
