Abstract

The main aim of the article was to present chosen aspects of the economic situation of individual farms’ sector in Poland as compared with the situation observed in the EU in 2000-2005. A special emphasis was put on the agrarian, productive and income situation in sector. Comparisons of Poland and other EU countries lead to a conclusion that Poland has a huge agricultural potential, but this potential is not taken advantage of. It’s main feature is a high diversity betwen regions. The most important problems observed in the sector are: inappropriate agrarian structure, superflous employment, low level of specialization and commercialisation of farms, disadvantageous structure of sources of agricultural income in family farms, lack of capital. A comparison of average economic results in Polish and other European farms in 2004 based on the European accountancy data allows to formulate a conclusion that most of the selected economic indices are approximately 3 times lower in an average Polish farm than in an average farm in the EU member states. / Synopsis. Do najtrudniejszych problemów w sektorze można zaliczyć: niekorzystną strukturę agrarną, przerost zatrudnienia, niski stopień specjalizacji gospodarstw, niski udział gospodarstw towarowych, niekorzystną strukturę źródeł dochodów rolniczych w indywidualnych gospodarstwach rolnych, niedostatek nowoczesnego kapitału.
