Abstract

The aim of the research was to analyze the level of profitability of pig farms characterized by different production systems: opened or closed. Analysis was made for all farms which produced 100 and more porkers per year and maintained accountancy within the Polish FADN in years 2004-2005. The research shows that the higher specialization was connected with lower input of production factors. The costs structure of pigs for slaughter production was characterized by the highest share of fodder costs. Higher farm income was achieved in farms with closed production system. In this group higher profitability of labour and fixed assets was noted too. These farms had bigger capacity for saving and self-financing in comparison with farms that followed the open system of production.
