Abstract

More than 100 countries in the world produce tobacco. The major producers are China, India, Brazil, the United States, Turkey, Malawi and Zimbabwe. They together produce over 80% of the world’s tobacco. In fact China alone accounts for over 35% of world production. FAO has forecasted that world tobacco production would be over 7.1 million tons in 2010. The numbers of smokers will increase mainly due to the growth of world’s population. By 2030 there will be at least another 2 billion people in the world. Cigarettes account for the largest share in manufactured tobacco products, 96% of sales total value. Asia, Australia and the Far East are by far the largest consumers (2,715 billion cigarettes), next are the Americas (745 billion), then Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union (631 billion) and Western Europe (606 billion). / Synopsis.
