Abstract

After a short historical review, the forest as a working place creating jobs is discussed. Present trends in the forestry workforce in practically all European countries show a continuing sharp decline in the total number of jobs in the forests. When analyzing forest as a working place at local level it appears that a forest holding of 15 000 hectare contributes to creation of 587 jobs including 90 jobs as direct employment, 471 jobs as indirect employment, and 26 jobs as induced employment. Forest jobs provide subsistence for four times more people than the directly employed. / Synopsis.
