Abstract

Among the numerous factors that determine the level and structure of consumption, income is of the leading importance. It not only limits but also modulates consumption. For over 50 years, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) has been conducting household-based surveys on a regular basis. On the basis of the source results of those surveys, the coefficients of structure as well as the income regression and elasticity of income and savings have been calculated and analysed. Separate analyses have been carried out for three groups at different income levels: the poorer, the moderately rich and the wealthy households. The analyses showed that the disposal of income depends on its level. In the wealthier households, both the level and the proportion of savings are generally bigger, and the intensity of expenditure’s response to a growth of income is much smaller. Expenses disbursement for food generally have an average elasticity, but some, such as catering, fish, fruit, drinking water have a high flexibility. / Synopsis.
