Abstract
The declining consumption of apples in Poland is becoming a problem for market participants, which is why it seems important to undertake actions aimed at reversing this trend. Knowing consumers’ preferences, especially those of young people, regarding fruit consumption may be helpful. The study aimed to identify students’ preferences in the fruit market, with particular emphasis on apples. Survey research was conducted from October 2024 to January 2025 among 729 first- and second-year students. A structured online questionnaire was used. To investigate the research questions, a dedicated online questionnaire was administered to a group of young adults, yielding a total sample of 729 respondents. The results revealed clear differences in both fruit preferences and purchasing behavior. The most liked fruits were strawberries (16%), raspberries (14%), bananas (13%), apples (12%), and blueberries (12%), while the most frequently purchased were bananas (43%) and apples (23%). Based on the presented photos, the respondents considered the following apple varieties to be the most delicious: Jonagored (28%), Gala Royal (26%), and Granny Smith (22%). A smaller percentage of respondents indicated that Red Delicious (12%), Ligol (9%), and Golden Delicious (3%) were the most delicious varieties. A significant percentage of respondents (26%) were unaware of any apple varieties. The most recognized varieties among the respondents were: Papierówka (29%), Ligol (29%), Champion (23.2%), Antonówka (21%), Jonagold/red (17%), and Gala (13%).
