Abstract

----- The fruit and vegetables production is an important economic activity for many areas of Mexico because they have comparative advantages to the U.S. producers, especially in the winter market. However, this production is generally carried out by non-local corporations. These value the territories as juncture agricultural areas, or places that offer short-term benefits but are not seen by the enterprises as priorities for long term investments. Nevertheless, eventually some local players who value the territory in a rather different way also take part on the productive system. The predominance effects on the economic, social and local environment depends on which type of valuation is dominat. This issue is discussed in the context of the Sayula municipality, in western Mexico, where the production of tomatoes and broccoli and other vegetables, was important from 1985 to 2005.
