Future Directions for Kibbutz Research: Theoretical and Methodological Considerations

Abstract

It is now acknowledged that the kibbutz is changing. However analysis of the kibbutz transformation has rested on weak conceptualizations, compounded by a similarly weak appreciation of the empirical evidence. These limitations and oversights leave a gap in research analyzing change within the kibbutz. What is required are two new directions in this research; the first in the development of a theoretical framework for discerning the source of the dynamism for change - the why - and the second, the utilization of a methodology capable of appreciating the process by which change is enacted - the how. This paper elaborates on the current problems with kibbutz research and then, by drawing upon the research of this author (forthcoming), offers outlines of these two new directions needed to be incorporated into future kibbutz research.
