Abstract
The agricultural supply chain in India has long been characterized by inefficiencies, fragmentation, and information asymmetry, leading to significant post-harvest losses, poor price realization, and limited access to markets especially for smallholder farmers. In recent years, the advent of digital technologies has begun to revolutionize how agricultural commodities are produced, managed, transported, and marketed. This paper explores the transformative role of technology in optimizing agricultural supply chains, improving transparency, efficiency, and sustainability. Key technological interventions discussed include Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, drones, cloud computing, and mobile applications. These tools facilitate real-time data collection, predictive analytics, and traceability, which in turn enhance decision-making at each stage of the supply chain. For instance, AIpowered platforms such as Kisan AI and Farmer Chat offer personalized agronomic advisories, while drones enable precision farming and crop health monitoring. Blockchain ensures tamper-proof documentation and traceability, crucial for food safety and export readiness. The paper also highlights major government initiatives like the Digital Agriculture Mission, Agri Stack, and the IDEA framework, which aims to build a unified digital ecosystem in collaboration with the private sector. Companies such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Ninja cart, and Agro Chain have demonstrated scalable models for integrating technology into agri-logistics and market linkages. Despite the promise, challenges such as digital illiteracy, inadequate rural infrastructure, and data privacy concerns persist. The paper emphasizes the need for targeted investments, farmer capacity building, and robust policy support to overcome these barriers. Ultimately, technology-enabled agricultural supply chains have the potential to increase farmers' incomes, enhance climate resilience, reduce wastage, and ensure food security. The integration of digital tools can significantly reshape India's agricultural landscape, making it more inclusive, competitive, and sustainable in the face of growing global demands.
