Abstract
The fishery sector of India has shown impressive annual growth rate of 10.88% during the year from 2014-15 to 2018-19. The fish production in India has registered an average annual growth of 7.53% during last 5 years and stood at an all-time high of 13.758 million metric tons during 2019-20. The Uttar Pradesh has vast inland fisheries resources with different level of fish production potential. Presently level of utilization and productivity is quit lower than the potentialities of these fisheries resources for fish production. In this study the trend of fish seed and fish production and relationship between seed supply and fish production was analysied using secondary data for the period 2004-05 to 2018-19 and fish marketing system of Gorakhpur district was analysed using primary data. Study revealed that the close relationship in fish seed supply and fish production in the state and hence concluded that the development of assured seed and feed supply chain in the state is essential for enhanhing the fish production. Further it was found that the fish markets are poorly endowed with required infrastructure and the marketing efficiency is poor. It can be improved by investment in PPP model and creating awareness among fish farmers/fishermen about benefits of adopting modern supply chains. The ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)’, FIDF, Blue revolution and other schemes launched by the Central Government are important for developing infrastructure facilities and achieving higher growth in fisheries sector of the state.
