Abstract

In fact, agribusiness covers a wide spectrum of agriculture related activities thereby agricultural product reach market with value addition or not. In Manipur total workforce engaged in agriculture according to 2011 census is about 52%. In 2015–16 the contribution of primary sector as a whole (at 2011–12 prices) in the NSDP of the state is only about 19% (Economic Survey, GoM-2015). Moreover, it is also true that dependency of people of the state on goods imported from other parts of the country and from/via Myanmar for consumption has been significantly increased in the past couple of decades. In such environment, the steps taken up by the state government in tune with the central government's initiative in recent past for doubling the income of farmers by 2022 is worth mentioning.Keeping the existing scenario in mind, the present study attempt to analyse the probable opportunities of agribusiness which may emerge in Manipur. The study will also stress to identify the preparatory measures required for entering into agribusiness sustainably in the state.
