Abstract

In Karnataka French bean is grown in all the seasons with the advantage of climate suitability and profitability. Hence, the present study was undertaken in Kolar district of Karnataka, which contributes to 30% both in terms of area and production. Multistage random sampling technique was used for selection of study area and respondents, in addition information from 10 wholesaler and 10 retailers were also collected. The results indicate that rate of increase in area under French bean in Karnataka was stable in past six years, whereas production and yield increased at 1.44% and 3.98% respectively. Benefit over cost (2.20) for French bean for one acre of land shown double the income for a rupee of expenditure. Among the marketing channels, channel 3 was more efficient in marketing (6.48), where as in terms of producer's price in consumer's rupee channel 1 (55.62%) was highest fallowed by channel 2 and 3. It was clear that, even though modern retail chains are efficient channels for vegetable, traditional chains also do serve the purpose of farmers and consumers in terms of Producer's price in consumer's rupee.
