Abstract

Our study analyzes the development of labor costs in a large-scale pig production company operating successfully today, taking into account the farms with different technical standards. The newly implemented greenfield investments occupy a prominent place in Hungarian slaughter pig production because technological backwardness represents a significant competitive disadvantage compared to European countries. The cost-reducing effect of pig farms equipped with advanced housing and feed technology contributes to the fact that the proportion of labor costs within the total cost also decreases. Our study covered two separate study units of a specific enterprise, based on primary data collection, and several farms within it. We analyzed, among other things, the impact of technological development on labor costs in a large-scale pig production company over a three-year average between 2020 and 2022. We found that a quantifiable relationship can be demonstrated in relation to labor costs. The labor costs of plants operating with modern and up-to-date technology are on average four percentage points more favorable than those of an earlier, but not the most up-to-date technology. The four percentage point effect on the cost structure, which will be presented later, is the largest after feed costs, and therefore a deeper analysis of these factors is not an opportunity, but a necessity. Considering the case study nature of the analysis, the general applicability of the conclusions that can be drawn from it is limited. At the same time, it can be stated that in order to improve international competitiveness, it is essential to create pig farms that meet the expectations of the 21st century. For farms where the use of labor is also more favorable, in other words more efficient, compared to those established earlier. The reason is very simple; the availability of agricultural labor is clearly limited and scarce.
