Abstract

COVID-19 and the subsequent Russian-Ukrainian conflict have had a dramatic impact on global food trade. The economic (e.g., energy price explosion, input price increase) and, in the case of agricultural production, environmental (e.g., drought) impacts have been even more pronounced in agricultural production. At the same time, the significant increase in product prices has provided a favorable opportunity for the spread of short supply chains (SSCs), as they produce high-quality, safe food, and, moreover, by local producers. Has the explosion in food prices affected traditional and alternative food chains equally? Due to the contagion effect, food inflation should be lower in SSCs. Therefore, with an appropriate pricing system, REL could gain further popularity, however, some producers are not even aware of the cost of producing spherical tomatoes, thus in many cases worsening the market opportunities of conscious producers. In this situation, training/education could help the most, along with quality assurance systems and stronger producer cooperation.
