Abstract

The profit-making ability of enterprises operating in the food industry is also influenced by numerous external factors. However, making the impact of external factors on profitability measurable leads to complex methodological issues. In our present analysis, we examine the profitability of food manufacturing enterprises and the impact of the supporting and competitive environment that influences it using a linear model. Our aim is to identify the impact of company, industry and regional (county) time factors by tracking ROA and ROE indicators between 2011 and 2021. Our results strongly support the dominance of firm effects in the Hungarian food industry, as these effects account for 27.95% of the variance in corporate profitability. The effects of activity, years and counties contributed 25.57%, 25.52% and 20.96% to the variance of ROA, respectively. Regardless of the method used, the dominance of the company effect and the relatively weaker presence of the effects of years and counties in our analysis confirm previous international scientific findings.
