Abstract
In my study, I deal with a term that is currently mostly found in French social discourse, which may be a characteristic of the relationship between agriculture and society. The term agribashing refers to the attacks that agriculture has to endure from different actors and situations. In my paper, I intend to deal with the meaning of this term and the different interactions between agriculture and society. The term appeared in French agrarianism and attempts to describe the perceived or real “harassment” that the agricultural sector or individual producers have to endure. When first approaching the term, the question may arise as to how well-founded the use of the term is at all, or whether there is a legitimate criticism or suggestion from society that agriculture should address, and how wise it is for the state to take a role in this debate, or in what way it is allowed to manifest itself at all. There are undoubtedly attacks and often unfounded criticisms that are specifically directed at agriculture and its actors. Examples of such incidents (criminal acts) are those when sites are broken into or machinery and animals are taken from farmers' houses. Untrue news or distortions often appear in the media, which can offend a large number of farmers. Agribashing and attacks related to agriculture can even be identified as a crisis phenomenon. In the article, I indicate several problems (livelihood, issues related to pesticides, foreign goods) that affect French agriculture more than misunderstanding-filled criticisms. Crime also appears in this context, and unfortunately, farmers can also throw away the school during their protests, which can even lead to violent acts. The topic is not irrelevant to Hungarian science and society, since the relationship between agriculture and society raises many questions here too. If we were to consider adopting this concept in Hungarian, we would have to proceed with caution, because it is not sufficiently clarified and its continuous unfounded use could hinder balanced social dialogue, while Hungarian agriculture (in parallel with French agriculture) currently has many other problems (even more important ones).
