Abstract
The situation of domestic dairy production is negatively affected by several factors: high equipment requirements, increased labor requirements, extreme weather resulting from climate change, unstable market conditions, and today – similarly to other livestock sectors – wild feed prices are causing serious problems for producers. In this situation, any credible tool that plays an analytical and decision-support role can be of great help to practitioners. As the first part of our work, we therefore created a production simulation model that analyzes the production, cost and income situation of the period between two calvings (lactation and dry period) broken down into feeding days, through a sample lactation selected based on a fixed set of criteria. The model can be used to analyze numerous scenarios, and in this material we examined the applicability of the break-even point in dairy production. The work was complicated by the fact that all of the lactations taken from practice show a hectic course, making it difficult to determine a point where profitable production turns into loss-making. We used several approaches in the analysis, which are presented in detail. The basis for applying the break-even point in practice is that dairy cattle are the only livestock species for which up-to-date, individual production data can be used when making farm management decisions, even under large-scale conditions.
