Sustainability is of paramount importance in 21st century agriculture worldwide, which is why the EU, among others, is treating this issue as a priority. According to the literature, agriculture is responsible for a – although not a very large – share of Co2 emissions. Greenhouse gases are primarily responsible for climate change, of which carbon dioxide is the most significant. The Co2 emissions of agriculture (which account for 7.7-13.8% of total Co2 emissions) and the combined amount of all greenhouse gases emitted by agriculture (which account for 14-18.4% of total emissions) changed in a very similar way worldwide during the period under review, i.e. between 1990 and 2016. Both the production of animal products and the use of fertilizers increase Co2 emissions. The main goal of this study was to determine what factors determine the CO2 emissions of agricultural production – since by exploring the factors affecting the CO2 emissions of agriculture, it is possible to take steps to increase sustainability. The research examined these factors and the relationship between the individual factors by country and group of countries, using data from the World Bank and other databases, reviewing data from several decades. The relationships revealed by statistical methods help experts and decision-makers find the intervention options that can positively influence the processes that help curb climate change. The optimal use of cultivated areas, resulting in less CO2 emissions, is definitely recommended. Limiting animal husbandry and reducing the amount of related by-products also reduces the emission of harmful gases, and it is also worth optimizing the use of fertilizer, eliminating the use of larger than ideal quantities.
