L'évolution récente d'une communauté rurale : le canton de Nozeroy (Jura)

Abstract

The sociological study of the Nozeroy « canton » (subdivision of arrondissement) enables us to reveal two kinds of fundamental relationships between man and natural factors: his relations with wood and cows. On the basis of these relations, two complementary social organizations have been established. One of them, the « voiturage » (farm association for transporting the wood from the forest to the processing plant) did not outlive the introduction of the internal combustion engine into the discharging and the transport of wood. On the other hand, the « fruitière » (small craftman's shop) has succeeded in integrating the new manufacturing techniques for producing the cheese « Comté ». Considering this situation, the article specifies the contradictory attitudes of the farmers facing technical progress : the cause lies both in their traditionalism (the group decides) and in their individualism.
