Abstract

The popular saying "who doesn't have elderly, should buy" had lost its relevance in the face of many current problems of pension systems. Aging population, declining birth rates and fertility are the current demographic trends worldwide, threatening the sustainability of social protection systems. The study explores the public pension system in Romania, operating principles, sustainability, the evolution of the average pension, retirement ages compared with other European Union countries.
