Abstract

The sugarcane agroindustry in Brazil has been facing a series of challenges imposed by sectoral deregulation. In a more competitive scenario, companies usually perform differently, especially in times of crisis. This article aims to identify the factors of failure regarding the sugarcane agroindustries by adopting the multi-case study approach as a research strategy. Data collection performed through structured interviews with representatives of the sector in the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. As a corollary, it identified that the lack of financial resources, inadequate cash flow, high costs of loans and agricultural production, as well as the control of gasoline prices are the main factors contributing to the recent failure of these companies in the selected states.
