A Systematic Review of Sustainable Consumption and Production in Africa

Unsustainable consumption and production remain the major root causes of the three planetary crises (climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution) worldwide. It, therefore, becomes an area of interest for scientists around the world as they pose their different perceptions of its causes and effects. This study performed a systematic literature review of sustainable consumption and production in Africa. The primary focus of this study is to examine whether the Africa region has done enough to create platforms for researchers to study sustainable consumption and production or not. The analysis was conducted using the Scopus technique to search for keywords (sustainable consumption, sustainable production, climate change, biodiversity and pollution). The visual data on authors’ keywords, co-occurrences, co-citations, and number of publications were retrieved from VOSviewer software. The results exhibited a noticeable increase in the number of publications by year for the period 2015-2023. Also, there is an increase in the number of co-citations, co-occurrences and authors keywords that are related to the subject area. These results imply that there is growing interest in the field of study. The study recommended that there is a need for a monitoring and evaluation framework that will be used to evaluate the performance of every country at every stage toward the achievement of SDG12.
