Tourism: The New(er) Frontier of Africa’s Sustainable Development Agenda?

Abstract

The multiplier and value chain integration effects associated with tourism buoys this global trade in services sector as a linchpin in Africa’s sustainable development agenda. In spite of the palpable direct, indirect and induced contribution of tourism to the sustainable development of host tourism economies, it appears as though a significant proportion of African countries have yet to prioritise tourism as a core socio-economic pillar in their economies. This article discusses the potential contribution of tourism to the achievement of some of the sustainable development goals in Africa, as well as the reasonability of the notion that tourism may be the new frontier of Africa’s sustainable development agenda within the context of the global competitiveness of the African tourism region.
