Abstract

This article discusses the practicality of adopting the Grameen Bank model as a tool to combat poverty in South Africa. The analysis reveals that a group-based lending approach, a collateral free system and highly motivated staff are some of the contributing success factors of the model. The practicality in a South African context found several similarities with the spirit of Ubuntu and the practices of stokvels and a financial analysis of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh against Capitec Bank and FirstRand Bank reveals Grameen Bank’s ability to operate within standard performance ranges, suggesting financially viability within South Africa.
