Abstract

It is well known that NT proBNP is used in diagnosis and prognosis of cardiac failure. This is a pilot study that aims to study the value of NT proBNP in patients without heart failure (but with conditions which may lead to heart failure) for guiding treatment and assessing prognosis. In my study I included 146 patients who were present at Bagdasar-Arseni Hospital for cardiology consultation during one year, with the following conditions: hypertension, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, valvular disease, arrhythmias. Patients who are already diagnosed with heart failure, systolic or diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricular and who had current symptoms of heart failure were excluded. The main conclusion was that patients in the intervention group, where the value of NT proBNP was used for choosing the investigation plan and therapeutic management have lower rate of heart failure or cardiovascular events than patients in the control group, in which we did not take into consideration NT proBNP value. The NT proBNP value in patients without heart failure can detect patients at risk of developing heart failure. Moreover, medical intervention guided by NT proBNP can prevent or delay heart failure.
