The Impact Of The Cardiac Complications On The Outcome Of Patients With Nontraumatic Subarachnoid Haemorrhage

Abstract

In the emerging field of organ crosstalk, brain–heart interconnections in the critically ill neurological patient hold a preeminent position, with clinically relevant implications in the intensive care unit (ICU) and during the perioperative period. Among the systemic complications in the early phase after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), cardiac dysfunction is frequent and occurs mainly in the most critically ill patients admitted in the intensive care unit. The spectrum of the cardiac anomalies is large and includes clinical, ECG, biochemical and ecocardiographic changes. This cardiac dysfunction, also known as “neurogenic stunned myocardium” or “neurogenic stress cardiomyopathy” is usually reversible and functional in origin, but is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The study hypothesis is that there are detectable predictive factors in patients affected by SAH that might explain the different susceptibility to the cardiac complications in the early phase and that these factors may be readily recognized and thus the adverse events may be anticipated.
