Abstract

In this article presents and substantiates methods of estimation in-use stocks of iron (bottom-up and top-downapproaches) and proposes the approach, based on them and also considering contemporary Russian economic conditions. The significance of this issue is that for last decade there has been a tendency of increasing both the share and volume of producing steel by EAF-process in world and in Russian ferrous metallurgy. As a result, the consumption of ferrous scrap has been increasing constantly. Thus, there is a necessity of studying the sources of its formation. And considering that more than 50 % of scrap generation is obsolete scrap, released from in-use steel stocks, it is crucial to analyze them.
