The Influence of Corporate Governance on Long-term Employment:A Study Using Data on Japanese Listed Firms

Abstract

This paper examines two hypotheses:the firm governance structure influences union formation, and the presence of labour unions fosters long-term employment practices. Results show that unionised firms have an average employee tenure 4.7 years longer than that of non-unionised firms, and that the influence of labour unions on long-term employment practices is underestimated.
