Abstract

Cet article étudie la construction de la catégorie statistique de chômage à la fin du xixe siècle dans différents pays d'Europe dont la France. En France, la grande innovation du recensement de 1896 est de ne poser la question qu'aux salariés, c'est-à-dire à ceux qui travaillent sous l'autorité d'un patron. Ce principe a pour conséquence de soustraire à la statistique du chômage les ouvriers à domicile et les salariés à emploi irrégulier qui sont sans ouvrage.
