¿Influencian mujeres a otras mujeres? El caso de las docentes en áreas STEM en Bogotá

Abstract

Tanto en Colombia como en otros países existe una subrepresentación evidente de mujeres en la escogencia de programas de ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés). Este hecho se relaciona con la existencia de brechas salariales diferenciadas por sexo que afecta negativamente a las mujeres. El objetivo de este documento es analizar la correlación entre la proporción de docentes mujeres en áreas de ciencias, tecnología y matemáticas en instituciones educativas oficiales y la matrícula en programas de educación superior en STEM en Bogotá durante el periodo 2008-2014. Se emplea un modelo de probabilidad lineal para estimar dicha correlación y se encuentra que, en promedio, tener docentes mujeres en áreas de ciencia, tecnología y matemáticas está asociado con incrementos en la probabilidad de matrícula en programas STEM para las estudiantes mujeres. Sin embargo, este efecto positivo no es suficiente para compensar la menor probabilidad que tienen las mujeres de impacto estudiar una carrera STEM. ***** Both internationally and in Colombia, there is a salient underrepresentation of women majoring in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This fact is related to the differential gender pay gap that affects women. This paper analyses the correlation between the proportion of female teachers in STEM fields in high school and the enrollment in STEM majors in Bogotá during 2008-2014 by high school graduates in those schools. Using a linear probability model, the results suggest that on average, higher proportion of high school STEM female teachers is associated with a higher probability of enrollment in STEM majors. Nonetheless, this positive effect does not suffice to offset the lower probability of women’s enrollment women in STEM.
