El Cultivo del Tabaco en América Latina

Abstract

Este trabajo estudia el cultivo del tabaco en América Latina, primer eslabón de la cadena de producción. Explorando diferentes variables hasta 2014 donde la información lo permita, se estudia la cantidad y el valor de la producción, el número de hectáreas cultivadas, el rendimiento de los cultivos, el sector externo y el empleo en once economías de América Latina más Canadá. Los resultados indican que la producción en América Latina ha venido creciendo en los últimos anos, suficiente para mantener su participación relativa mundial. Argentina, Brasil y Canadá se destacan por ser los mayores productores de la región. Los incrementos en la producción de algunos de los países de América Latina se asocian al buen desempeno de sus rendimientos, mayores estos últimos al promedio mundial. Los precios al productor y el sector externo han tenido un desarrollo positivo y significativo en la región, mientras que sus exportaciones, del orden de US$3374 millones, tienden a concentrarse en unos pocos países. El cultivo de tabaco en América Latina y Canadá genera alrededor de 800,000 empleos directos.
