Assessment of vulnerability and capacity to the cyclone ‘Amphan’ impacts of the southwestern coastal part of Bangladesh: an empirical contextual investigation

Abstract

In 2020, the tropical cyclonic storm Amphan smashes seriously 8 southwestern coastal districts in Bangladesh, which set off socioeconomic effects as far as vulnerability and capacity settings. This investigation means to evaluate the vulnerability and capacity of Shyamnagar Upazila, Bangladesh's most storm-influenced region, to the latest extremely serious cyclonic tempest ‘Amphan.’ Following 14–20 days of its effect, this examination led a household study in the four unions (Shyamnagar, Bhurulia, Gabura and Paddapukur) of Shyamnagar Upazila, which is situated in the most southern part of Satkhira area. Questionnaire addresses sorted into Social & Human, Physical and Financial indicators; these comparing indicators were selected through literature review and little changed dependent on nearby situations. An aggregate of 22 vulnerability indicators and 26 capacity indicators were utilized to decide their indexes. The outcome demonstrates that total vulnerability overweighs the total capacity in the considered region during Amphan. Definitely, the region was more vulnerable dependent on Physical variables, while more capable for the cyclone with regard to Social & Human variables. The acknowledge of these results will likewise assist the public authority with facilitating improve its calamity the board plan with critical infrastructural adjustment featured in this study.
